Life keeps us all running, but as Cochren & Co.’s new single attests, the direction we’re running is what’s most important. After all, the direction we take determines the destination. As for the band from Indiana, they’re headed home. The group’s soulful and upbeat “Running Home” borrows a page from the story of the Prodigal Son as lead singer Michael Cochren shares his own personal journey of choosing to run toward God instead of running away from Him. He wrote the choir-infused track with Matthew West and Jeff Pardo.

“We’ve all heard the saying, ‘There’s no place like home.’ When I think of what ‘home’ means, I think of comfort, rest, safety and love. When we go off looking for these things in the broken world, we will never find them,” Cochren shares of the song’s theme. “Ultimately, we only find what we need when we return to our loving God.”

“Running Home” is the title-cut of Cochren & Co.’s sophomore album, the 10-song follow-up to the collective’s 2021 full-length debut, “Don’t Lose Hope.”

“In my wandering years, when it became more and more clear that the things I was using to fill my emptiness were really making me more empty… I began feeling a draw on my heart to return to my spiritual home,” Cochren explains of his own experience that inspired the new anthem. “Yet, I had this fear in my mind that God was just waiting for me in anger, to punish me. But that’s not how the parable [of the Prodigal Son] ends. The father runs to greet the son, throws a robe around his back, a ring on his finger, a kiss on his cheek, and then they throw a party for him! I received this welcome from God, and that’s the welcome that’s waiting for anyone who says, ‘I’m done running away, I’m running home!’”

Cochren & Co. — which also includes Michael’s wife, Leah — will take the good news of “Running Home” to arenas across the country through the end of March on TobyMac’s “Hits Deep Tour 2023.” In addition to Cochren & Co., the extensive multi-artist trek also features Crowder, Tasha Layton, Jon Reddick and Terrian.
