Former We The Kingdom Frontwoman Franni Cash Proves She’s Every Bit the Solo Star on Daring Debut ‘Here I Am’
Franni Cash emerged as an undeniable star when her family band, We The Kingdom, released their first single, “Holy Water,” in 2019. Several dark selections explore haunting corners of her past, including the Christian cult she was a part of. She courageously calls out the cult leader, and no song does this better than “Raised By Wolves,” which exposes the lies she fell prey to as she ultimately concedes, “I was raised by wolves, but saved by the Lamb.” “Darken The Doorway” looks at the story from a different angle as she empathizes with others who possess church hurt that might be keeping them from a healthy relationship with God.
Numerous tracks tackle the wider, judgmental Christian culture that raised her and, particularly, the unrealistic expectations it often places on women. “Church Clothes,” the only cut from her previously released EPs that made its way onto her full LP, addresses the common misconception that you have to look a certain way to be considered holy. Meanwhile, “Jesus Girl” feels like the older, more mature sister to “Church Clothes,” empowering female listeners with the comforting thought that you’re allowed to change and grow, as long as every version of yourself remains rooted in Christ.
On the brash “Jezebel,” the song’s controversial protagonist ignores toxic advice in favor of the truth across a pop selection sure to resonate with teen girls struggling with peer pressure and the desire to fit in. Later, album closer “Welcome To The Club” empathizes with Cash’s fellow sisters across an arms-wide-open ballad that extends a membership to anyone who’s ever felt lonely, out of place or not good enough.
The sentimental “Shoes To Fill” serves as a nod to her musical lineage. A coming-of-age letter to her dad — award-winning songwriter and producer Ed Cash, who remains an active member of We The Kingdom — the dreamy pop track reveals a devoted daughter attempting to alleviate her father’s fears as she spreads her wings.
