Phil Wickham Reveals His Biggest Dream for His Children on ‘Homesick For Heaven’

Phil Wickham has written multiple songs about eternity, but his new single, “Homesick For Heaven,” might just be his best attempt to capture it yet. While he references seeing loved ones and heroes of the faith walking on streets of gold, Wickham’s latest anthem is far more than a longing for the beauty and friendship that await. In fact, the bright, driving track was ironically inspired by his kids.

The father of four says he was washing dishes and happened to glance out the window just in time for golden hour. The descent of the San Diego sun enveloped his backyard in a warm orange glow as his children laughed and played outside, and for a few fleeting minutes, he savored the perfection of the moment. That’s when he realized that, as a parent, his biggest dream for heaven isn’t mansions of glory, but the pleasure of seeing his kids run into the arms of the Father. That’s also when he recognized the significant role he plays in bridging that gap between heaven and earth for his kids, as he helps write eternity on their little hearts, pointing them to Jesus at every turn.

As the twilight faded, the singer/songwriter grabbed a pen and wrote the seminal line of the chorus:

I wanna see my children run to Your arms
And worship the Savior who wears my scars
There’s an ache in my heart
I’m homesick for heaven

“Homesick For Heaven” appears on the K-LOVE Fan Award winner’s most recent full-length endeavor, “Song Of The Saints,” which also features lead single “The King Is In The Room” and No. 1 hit “What An Awesome God.”

In addition to hosting his annual Christmas tour in his native SoCal this holiday season and headlining an arena outing in support of “Song Of The Saints” at the top of 2026, Wickham recently voiced the principal character in the upcoming animated film, “DAVID,” in theaters Dec. 19.
