K-LOVE Album Spotlight: Mac Powell "Live from Red Rocks"

In August of 2022, Mac Powell played Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the fourth time. Regardless of his tenure at the storied venue, the performance commemorated a milestone for the multi-GRAMMY® award winner. The evening marked the first time he took the famous stage in Colorado as a co-headliner without his former Third Day bandmates. (The group’s final performance of their nearly 30-year career took place at Red Rocks in 2018 during Third Day’s farewell tour.) Recognizing his most recent Red Rocks appearance as a noteworthy benchmark, the iconic frontman pressed record on his landmark seven-song solo set and turned it into his latest project, “Live From Red Rocks.”

Powell’s performance was part of last year’s “K-LOVE Presents Live at Red Rocks” event, which was filmed exclusively for K-LOVE On Demand. The half-hour recording showcases the wide breadth of Powell’s professional trajectory to date. Backed by a dynamic band of musicians that included his daughter, son and son-in-law, the singer/songwriter seamlessly integrated his fresh solo material into a diverse setlist that also included Third Day hits, a selection from his foray into country music and a surprising cover — all the while keeping the audience full of K-LOVE listeners engaged with every track.

“While I love making records, my favorite part of this job has always been touring and singing along with fans in person,” Powell asserts. “I’m so excited for you to relive this special night with us at Red Rocks.”

The Atlanta native kicked off his time on the legendary stage with Third Day signature song “Soul on Fire” before launching into the title-cut of his acclaimed solo Christian debut, “New Creation,” which he most recently performed at the 2023 K-LOVE Fan Awards alongside special guest Jason Crabb. Next, “Flood Waters” — a toe-tapping, electric jam session plucked from 2019’s “Back Again” by Mac Powell and the Family Reunion — gave way to a worshipful moment punctuated by his previous outfit’s “God of Wonders,” with Andrew Ripp on supporting vocals.

The father of five then stripped it down for a brief acoustic medley, taking requests in real time from the audience of fans nearly 10,000 strong. The result was two Third Day favorites — “Revelation” and “Love Song” — followed by Powell lending his voice to the refrain of old hymn “Blessed Assurance.”

Prior to concluding his set with his first solo CCM single, “River of Life,” the esteemed vocalist delivered an unexpected cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Don’t Stop.”

“Live at Red Rocks” reveals Powell to be a personable, multifaceted musician with inevitable artistic longevity sure to propel him far beyond his celebrated three-decade legacy with Third Day. As evidenced by this new live offering, his unforeseen versatility, unmistakable voice and solid songwriting only build on the firm foundation he crafted with his beloved band.

Fans can watch Powell’s full Red Rocks performance now on K-LOVE On Demand. For those wishing to experience the famed venue for themselves, for the third consecutive year, “K-LOVE Presents Live at Red Rocks” will take place Aug. 1-2, 2023, with an incredible lineup that features 11 acts across two nights, including Zach Williams, We The Kingdom, MercyMe, Jeremy Camp and more.

As for Powell, this fall he’ll reprise his popular “Mac Powell & Friends” tour, comprised of intimate evenings anchored by acoustic songs and stories with “friends” Brandon Heath, Jordan St. Cyr and Rhett Walker. All four artists will share the stage in the style of a Nashville songwriters’ round for an unforgettable night of music.
